Redirect and URL Migration Strategy

Standardized rules used by Huizhitu to preserve search equity, maintain canonical alignment, and prevent crawl fragmentation.

Primary Redirect Principles

Use permanent 301 redirects for legacy URLs with direct topical equivalents.

Maintain one-to-one mapping where possible, and avoid redirecting many old URLs to the homepage unless no relevant destination exists.

Keep protocol, host, and trailing-slash rules consistent to minimize duplicate URL forms.

Canonical and Index Integrity

Every indexable destination page should have a self-referencing canonical URL.

Do not canonicalize to redirected URLs, and ensure canonical targets return HTTP 200 status.

Update internal links to final destinations to reduce redirect chains.

404 and Soft-404 Controls

Return true 404 status for removed pages without replacement and provide helpful recovery links.

Avoid thin placeholder pages that return 200 but provide no useful content, which can trigger soft-404 classification.

Migration Validation Checklist

Validate redirect maps in staging with crawl tools before go-live.

Resubmit sitemap after migration and monitor index coverage in Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.

Review top landing pages and external backlinks for broken targets post-release.
